Who were the cluniacs?
  • reform of the Benedictines
  • originated at Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy in 910
  • other "daughterhouses" depended upon Cluny --> uniformity
  • emphasized scholarship rather than manual labor
  • given to more elaborate ritual and lavish architectural decoration
  • few nunneries, not seen as cost effective
  • twelfth century -- some 314 monasteries
  • some famous leaders
    • Peter the Venerable (ruled 1122-1156)
      • ninth abbot
      • Cluny reaches zenith of influence and prosperity
  • second to Rome as the chief center of the Christian world
  • home of learning + training school for popes (Gregory VII, Urban II, Paschal II, Urban V)
